1827 , Nov 25th: born at St. Saviour ( St Saviour's and St Olave's Church,Southwark, London) - source: baptism recordfound by Mary Blakely at ancestry.com, and 1851 Census1832 or 1833: Jan 6th: very faint scan of baptism found: John Justin's baptism at St Leonard, Shoreditch, which gives his date of birth as 25Nov 1827. 1834: his mother Thomasine Ellen dies (when aged about 6 yrs old)1843: John Justin's father (James of Tralee) marries widow Mary Anne Lloyd's mother (Mary Ann Lloyd formerly Lock), and hence starts the McCarthies into the business line of pawnbrokers.John Justin would be about 16 when he met his step sister (and future wife) Mary Anne Lloyd, agedapprox 4 or 5 at that time.1851 (March 31) Census: living at Islington Rd, Head of Household, as Tobacconist, at 10 Tyndale Place, Islington, with sister Annie as Head. John Justin now aged approx 24.1851 or 52: probably betroathed to future wife Mary Anne Lloyd or "Polly" (then aged 14), who was his step-sister. I assume he would have known her as a child at around 1843 or before when his father (James of Tralee) married the widow Mary Anne Lloyd's mother (Mary Ann Lloyd formerly Lock).1852 (June 12th):John Justin (with his brother James Jeremiah) set off from Gravesend to Melbourne, Australia to prospect for gold. 90 day journey, so arrived 4th Sept (source: John Justin's letter to Polly.1852:11 September - Australian Historic Newspapers Online (http://ndpbeta.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/home):The Argus, Melbourne, 11 September 1852: Sept. 10 - ship John Taylor, 787 tons, W. Hawkins commander, from London June 12. Names 23 cabin passengers "and 193 in the steerage".The Maitland Mercury and Hunter River General Advertiser, N.S.W., 25/9/1852 (quoting Melbourne Argus): The John Taylor from London arrived last evening with upwards of 200 passengers, all in good health and high spirits for the [gold] diggings, neither births nor deaths occurred which, considering the number, is favourable for the ship. The John Taylor has a small amount of specie on board, about £3000.1853: His first child HELENA (Mary Anne Helena McCarthy) was born 12th Jan 1853. So she was conceived around March/April 1952. Her father John Justin McCarthy was then aged 25 (and described with occupation of CIGAR MERCHANT in HELENA's birth certificate); and her mother Mary Ann Lloyd was still under age. In June 1952 John Justin left for Australia (hence those letters we have seen - where John Justin clearly expresses his continued love for her). Indeed, in his Sept 1852 letter he makes no reference to their new child (so probably unaware) ans just speaks of wanting to be lying by her side.HELENA was born out of wedlock since John Justin did not return from Australia until 1855 when he did the honourable thing and marry Mary Ann Lloyd (who was by then of age to marry)1853: Letter from brother James Jeremiah (at Mount Alexander, Forrest Creek Diggins, Australia) to father James McCarthy of Tralee.Tells that they left Melbourne in early Oct 1852 travelling 90 miles to diggins. John Justin has opened a large store at the Lodden diggins, while brother James Jeremiah has storein Forrest Creek diggins.1854: John Justin's letter to sister Annie (from Campbell Creek dated April 23rd 1854).Stayed in Autralia until late 1845/early 1855.1855: Marriages Mar 1855 Lloyd Mary Ann Islington 1b 254 (John Justin's step sister) MCCARTHY John Islington 1b 254 John Justin married his step-sister (the daugher of his step-mother Mary Ann Lock who previously married William Henry Lloyd). Mary Ann was 17 years old when she married. The marriage certificate describes her as a "minor" which just meant that she was under 21 years old.In 1855 there was no married woman's property act, so the Lloyd jewelery business (of which Mary Ann was given Ward of Court) became John Justin's through this marriage.1855 Marriage Certificate shows living at 26 Gloucester Crescent, Regents Park / 28 Clarence Terrace, Rotherfield St. (near 19 Rotherfield St where Mary Ann Helena McCarthy was earlier born ).Witnesses: J(ames) McCarthy (father) and M.McCarthy (who is almost certainly to be his step-mother( who also was witness to John Justin's brother's (James Jeremiah) wedding next year in 1856 Note:) The address of father (James McCarthy) 26 Gloucester Crescent, Regents Park was a very prestigious one. If you google "26 Gloucester Crescent" particularly using 'books' search you will come up with several people who lived there.1855; Osbourne_herd Genealogy states:Event: 26 Gloucester Crescent Type: Fact , Date: 1855, Place: Regents Park, London, England1858 Event: Pawnbroker; Type: Fact Date: 1858, Place: Islington, London, England; source:Osbourne_herd Genealogy 1861 Census: transcription details for: Living at 7, Pembroke Terrace, St Mary Islington (note: this terrace is no more; 1-18 Pembroke Terrace (1848) was renamed 195-235 Caledonian Road). In 1914 Mr Harry Beevers was living at Lodge, Leppitt Hill but it was no longer Bellair! The big house where Mr Baring below lived was called Wallsgrove House and there are so few properties around that the McCarthys must have lived at its Lodge.Lippitt's Hill Lodge, High Beach, was the madhouse where the poet John Clare lived. (Beech Hill House, High Beach, was where Tennyson heard the Waltham Abbey bells, and wrote Ring Out Wild Bells in 'In Memoriam'.)Note:I get the impression that John Justin and family moved to Bell-air Lodge( Lippitt's Hill Lodge, High Beach), generally during the 1880s-90s before retiring in 1901 to Hove.We have a garden family photo of John Justin and his family taken probably around 1893-96.1891 Census: John Justin living in Bournemouth, Christchurch, Southcote Road, Selbourne, with wife Mary Ann, eldest daughter Mary Ann Helena( and husband John Evans).
