The Osborne & Herd Genealogy tree has him as born 08 DEC 1789 in Tralee.1818: Deposition letter showing James (late of Dublin) travelling in France. For copy of letter see John McCarthy's book p53.1823-26: in Paris (1st children James Jeremiah, Thomas, Annie, Mary Elizabeth born there).1827: in Southwark, London by this time (John Justin born there in 1827)1827 (nov 3) letter from his father Daniel from 62 Dawson Street, commenting on the fact thatJames has not written to him in a while.Letter indicates that James is in London with wife and family1833: son John Justin baptised - St. Leonards, Shoreditch1833: JAMES MCCARTHY and THOMASINE clearly named as parent in baptism record of son William Alexander McCarthy.Rare find made thanks to Mary Blakely - sent me baptism record (local parish) Summary is: son born 1833, Islingtonbaptism: June 1833burial: 1834 St Mary, Islington1834: 1st wife (Thomasine Ellen) dies; buried at St. Mary, Newington aged 42.1843 Q3: source FreeBMD - marries 2nd wife Mary Ann Lloyd nee Lock (widow of William Henry Lloyd) - record found and scanned.Marriage record shows:1832 Marriage solemnised at the Parish Church St John the Evangelist, Smith Square, Westminster. curate W Tennant. When married: August 9 1843Names: James McCarthy, Mary Ann LloydAge: of full age (both)Condition: Widow (both)His profession: Wine merchantHer profession: ?Residence at time of marriage:his: 19 Trinity Square, Southwarkher: 2 Vauxhall Bridge RoadFather's Name: (his) Daniel McCarthy; (her) James LockDaniel's occupation gentleman, James Lock carman.Wintnesses: Francis Waldron and John McKennaNote: this was to be the first of at least 3 marriages between McCarthys and Lloyds:- James McCarthy of Tralee m Mary Ann Lloyd nee Lock- James's daughter Mary Elizabeth McCarthy m Robert James Lock ( Mary Ann Lock's 1st son)- James's son John Justin m Mary Ann Lloyd (Mary Ann Lock's daughter)1845: witness in his daugther's wedding (Thomasine Ellen McCarthy)1849: daughter Emily born in Islington, Hackney, London1851 Census: found as JOHN MACCARTHY (as an "assistant" ) living at 4 Canonbury Street, Islington with: Mary WIFE aged 42Emily DAUGHTER aged 4Mary Anne Lloyd DAUGHTER aged 14 (step daughter)James SON 20 (James Jeremiah)Note on this 1851 Census record:THIS SHOWS A JOHN MACCARTHY AND HAS HIS BIRTH DATE AS AROUND 1799 (10 years off 1789); THIS JOHN MUST BE JAMES MCCARTHY SINCE IT HAS HIS STEP DAUGHTER MARY ANNE LLOYD AT THE RIGHT AGE (and correct name for wife and children). IT ALSO SHOWS THE BIRTH DATE FOR MARY (ANNE LLOYD NEE LOCK - WHICH WE CAN DETERMINE (AT THE AGE OF 42) WAS c1809.GREAT FIND!!! ONE OF THE FEW OFFICIAL DOCUMENTS FOUND OF JAMES MCCARTHY OF TRALEE.(no wonder if records have him down as JOHN MACCARTHY - although 1833 baptism of son names him as "James McCarthy", as does 1845 marriage of his daughter where he is a witness.1851: Annie (daughter) and John Justin (youngets son) appear both as Tobacconist at different address (10, Tyndale Street, Islington).1852: Letter from James (from 28 Rutherford Square, Lower Road, London dated Thursday, 8th July 1852-54: to his sons James Jeremiah and John Justin in Australia (digging for gold).1853: Letter from son James Jeremiah shows James of Tralee living at:28, Clarence Terrace, Rotherfield Street, Islington, London.1855:described as a "Gent" in his son John Juston marriage certificate living in affluent 26 Gloucester Crescent, Regent Park, London. Example: just 2 years later we have a:Alexandre Tolhausen - Patent laws and legislation - 1857 - 31 pages... in foreign languages having been translated for the Commissioners of Patents by the Author. London, June 1857. 26 Gloucester Crescent, Regent's Park. ...see: http://books.google.co.uk/books?q=%2226+Gloucester+Crescent%22+1856: Again described as "Gent" or "Gentleman" - implies he was not working but had sufficient money to live independently.1859 (27-5-1859) dies (source: scrap note obtained via Vernon Nicholas Mullings)This scrap of paper was the break in revealing James McCarthy (of Tralee)'s 2nd wife. Seems to be substantiated by feebmd:Deaths Jun 1859 :MCCARTHY James Kensington 1a 48Given that in 1855 James of Tralee was living in affluent 26 Gloucester Crescent, Regent Park, London..... near Kensington ... I think this is very believeable.Other sources on James McCarthy of Tralee: come from "McCarthys of Munster" and John McCarthy in his book " A ghost upon my path" (from Black Swan 2003 - which you can purchase very cheaply via Amazon.co.uk). Here he shows a deposition sworn in by James McCarthy of Tralee's sister, Mary Supple, to a JP in Ireland, confirming of his existence and James's birth in 1789 in Tralee, Ireland (p53). In his book, this is backed up my a letter from Capt. Jeffrey McCarthy (p123) confirming he is his grandfather. If anything, this is the best evidence that he is my great-great grandfather James.Other support evidence: Osbourne-Herd Genealogy at:source: http://www.users.on.net/~osborne/genealogy/grpname3.html#MCCARTHYStephen Williamson's Notes (as well as John McCarthy's book) has him down as a "rover" or traveler: . He went to Dublin, then France, before settling in London between 1824-27 (as a Wine Merchant).Compiled by: Richard Charles McCarthy 2010
