taken from Stephen Williamson's notes on the Austens:George bapt 1827 died 1916 was a Manchester Warehouseman at 44 Colvestone Rd, Hackney, London in 1881C. (A Manchester Warehouse was a name given to an establishment dealing in textiles i.e. a draper’s shop). In 1856 he married at St Alphege Mary Elizabeth Bilbe born 1828, daughter of a Tallow Chandler (Bilbe Brothers, Wholesalers, 12 St Alphage Lane, John Bilbe, Grocer and Tallow Chandler 16 Guildhall Street in 1855 and in 1828 Pigot at 16 Guildhall St too), when he is described as a Laceman of Dalston (part of Hackney). There they had 5 children who survived childhood: Mary Harriot born 1857 Shoreditch, Walter George born 1859 Shoreditch, (Emily born 1860 Hackney died young), Percy Lush born 1862, Kate born 1863, and Alfred William born 1864. At 1861C they were living at 7 Alma Rd, Dalston. George and Mary returned to Canterbury (1891C) and from 1891 to at least 1903 lived at Bellair, 26 Norman Road, Nunnery Fields and is listed in directories as one of Canterbury’s Gentry. Mary died in 1899. George died at his son Walter’s house ‘Dormans’, 40 Whitstable Rd.
